:  a long cylindrical muscle that arises from the upper two-thirds of the axillary border of the scapula, passes behind the long head of the triceps to insert chiefly on the greater tubercle of the humerus, contributes to the formation of the rotator cuff of the shoulder, and acts to rotate the arm laterally and draw the humerus toward the glenoid fossa
